THEME

In 1874, Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky viewed an exhibition of works by artist Viktor Hartmann in Saint Petersburg. The scenes in Hartmann’s paintings inspired Mussorgsky to write the individual movements of his suite Pictures at an Exhibition. Sadly, many of the original paintings have been lost, but art inspires art! Over the 150 years since the creation of Mussorgsky’s work, many artists have reinterpreted the music into visual form.

We challenge student artists to listen to one or more movements from the suite (linked below) and create your own visual interpretation of what you hear. Remember: while you may encounter works by other artists on these subjects, the goal is not to imitate but to create something new. What matters most to us is your visual interpretation of the music. Entries will be judged on originality and unique representation as well as on technical skill.
