The Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra (LSYO) provides performing opportunities for students age 10-18 who have at least three years of experience with a private teacher or in school music programs.
Concert dates for 2011-12
Dec. 17, 4pm at Stone Bridge High school
May 5, 4pm at Stone Bridge High school
Participation is by audition. All members are re-auditioned annually. Auditions are generally held the first weekend after school begins in the fall and then as needed to fill open positions. For the 2011-12 season, approximately 100 students auditioned, and 65 were accepted.
For the past two years, Catoctin School of Music (formerly Wayne’s World Music) in Leesburg has hosted our September auditions, which generally run from 9 am Saturday through 7 pm on Sunday. Many thanks to Catoctin!
LSYO rehearses each Thursday during the school year from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm. Rehearsals include professionally directed sectionals, a master class, and a concerto competition. Scheduled concert dates are TBD.
Rehearsals and concerts generally take place at Heritage High School in Leesburg. Many thanks to Stone Bridge staff, Fine Arts faculty, and especially Band Director Dr. Keller!
Tuition is $175 per semester, or $325 when paying for a full year. Payment may be split into two $175 payments due in September and January. Some scholarships are available on a need basis.
2011-12 LSYO AUDITION REQUIREMENTS
- Students must provide own instrument
- All instruments: major scales* up to 4 flats and 4 sharps, 2 octaves
- Violins: add 3rd octave for C, D and A scales*
- Winds and Brass: add chromatic scale*, 2-3 octaves
- Prepared excerpts
- (posted here when auditions scheduled)
- Prepared solo up to 5 minutes in length
- No sight reading
* Memorization of scales not required
OPEN POSITIONS: The LSYO currently has openings for the following instruments: bassoon, horn, bass trombone, tuba, percussion, viola, and double bass. Please contact lsyo@loudounsymphony.org to schedule an audition.
