About Us
The Loudoun Symphony was formed in the fall of 1990 to provide musicians from Loudoun County and the surrounding area with the opportunity to present fine music to Loudoun audiences and to enrich our cultural climate. The Loudoun Symphony Association is actually an umbrella organization for three separate ensembles: the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra, the Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Loudoun Symphony String Workshop.
Performing Ensembles
Loudoun Symphony Orchestra The Loudoun Symphony presents a subscription series of five orchestral concerts, including a Family Concert, and two chamber concerts each season. The concerts include both popular and serious major works from all periods and often feature renowned soloists. In addition, Symphony musicians offer an annual Preschool concert, a series of mini-concerts in the elementary schools, and Instrument Petting Zoos in collaboration with Melodee Music and Loudoun County Public Libraries.
The Orchestra is made up primarily of amateur musicians who volunteer their time and talent to bring beautiful and interesting music to our friends and neighbors here in Loudoun. A small core of paid string players leads each string section. Thanks to the generosity of the community and the predominantly volunteer make up of our organization, ticket prices have remained quite low. Symphony concert admission at the door is $18 for adults, $15 for seniors, and free for youth (18 and under). Discounts are applied for advance and group ticket purchases.
Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra The Youth Orchestra was formed in 2003 to provide an opportunity for the talented young musicians in the county to perform orchestral music. The group presents two or three concerts during the season. Membership is by audition and is subject to an annual tuition fee. Scholarship assistance is available.
Loudoun Symphony String Workshop The String Workshop provides an opportunity for string players of all ages and ability levels to play in an ensemble. There are no audition requirements or fees. Volunteer symphony members play alongside the workshop members, providing advice and assistance. The workshop presents a short concert just prior to each of the Saturday evening Symphony concerts.
Music Director Artistic leadership for the Loudoun Symphony Orchestra is provided by Music Director Mark Allen McCoy. Maestro McCoy holds degrees from the Conservatory of Music in Kansas City and the University of Illinois and furthered his conducting studies at Peabody Conservatory. He has won numerous honors and conducted major orchestras in venues around the world. The Loudoun Symphony Youth Orchestra and String Workshop are under the leadership of Dr. Yeong Su Kim. Dr. Kim holds degrees from University of Maryland, University of Southern California, Yale University, and Catholic University. In addition to his work with our educational ensembles, he conducts several orchestras in the area and is a professional oboist.
Symphony Management The Loudoun Symphony Association voting membership is made up of the orchestra musicians, the Board of Directors, and all donors of $50 or more. The day-to-day management of the symphony is performed by an Executive Director, an Operations Manager, the Executive Committee of the Board, and an extensive volunteer staff.
Expenses and Funding The Loudoun Symphony Association, Inc., is a not-for-profit, 501(c)(3) Virginia corporation. Major operating expenses include Music Director and staff salaries, string section leader service honorariums, music rentals, mailings, PR materials, and office rental. Expenses are covered by ticket sales, individual and corporate donations, state and foundation grants, and occasional fundraisers.
